Are you heavily in credit card debt? Is your interest rate high and income low? Like millions of others, you are probably struggling every day just to make the minimum credit card payments. But what can do you? Should you file bankruptcy? A new law was passed a few years ago making it much harder to file bankruptcy and wipe out debt. Also, a bankruptcy stays on your credit report for several years. It just isn't worth it.

Call your credit card lender and try to negotiate a better deal. If you are paying high interest and have at least been making the minimum payments on time, get a lower interest rate. Many of them will. Also ask if they are willing to forgive a small amount of debt. If you are largely in debt, some of the will be happier to see less money than none. I have had credit cards make me a deal to end the card and I only had to pay 75% of the balance. They had already made plenty of money off interest, so really, they weren't losing anything.

Most of them will not come out and offer this, you must ask. Be sure you are making any payment on time, not even a few days late, because making late payments will show on your credit report. Making the minimum does as well, but at least that shows you are making effort. You will have an easier time trying to get an interest rate down from something like 19% to 14%. While they make less money in the long run with a lower interest rate, the chances of getting paid back are also higher.

Stop charging to your credit cards as well. As long as you have money on the account to spend, you are going to have an even harder time getting it paid off. Develop a plan so you know your income, monthly bills, and stop buying luxuries so you can pay any extra amount on your cards and become debt free. You do not need credit cards to get through life. They are really just a luxury and a way to tell people they can buy things they normally can't afford. The problem is you will end up paying more than the item was ever worth by the time you have paid off the interest.

So start by asking the bank for a lower interest rate, then see if they are willing to forgive part of the debt so you can get the card paid off. If they say no, ask them for other options.
