Cuisine ? Bangkok has a whole host of restaurants offering exciting food, from things you may recognise to things you never thought you could eat! Ratchaprasong is a good area to go for food, with the choice between eating at one of the many food stalls which pop up around dusk and offer grilled meat, noodle dishes and beverages too. In CentralWorld, the shopping mall, you can find around 50 restaurants to eat in, ranging from more relaxed and affordable to the upmarket and expensive. The food will not let you down.
Things to do ? Bangkok has a wide variety of daytime activities to indulge in, with its markets some of the best in the world. Stalls selling everything from clothing to food and drink as well as souvenirs to take home which are refreshingly not of the usual tacky kind. Shopping, sightseeing, canal cruises, culture shows, dining, partying and buzzing around this lively city in a tuk tuk are all part of the experience.
Things to see ? from the Grand Palace to exotic Wat Arun and the bohemian Khao San Road, Bangkok is a whole trip in itself. Visit some exemplary museums full of ancient Asian art, marvel at endless ornate temples and giant reclining or seated Buddhas, wander through teak palaces or be dazzled by the night life and its naughty corners.
Shopping ? is a highlight of Bangkok since there is a such a variety at knock down prices, with numerous large malls, markets, emporiums and souvenir vendors crowding the pavements. Don't miss out on tailor suits, silk, handicrafts for the rellies back home, electronic gadgets and jewellery, but avoid the gem scams.
Hotels and hospitality ? Bangkok offers some top class hotels such as the Park Plaza and the President Solitaire which offer luxury for affordable prices. For around 60 pound a night you can book yourself into one of these four-star hotels and enjoy your stay as you experience the sights and sounds of the country's capital. There is a large choice, affordable and always delivered with that friendly Thai smile. Dining and drinking are equally a highlight of the city with endless lively and good value options, such as Sukhumwit road for the expats, Silom for its red light district and nightmarket, among plenty of others.
When travelling abroad it is advisable to take out some decent insurance to avoid inconveniences and helath risks. Thailand certainly has its, with dangerous driving, tropical diseases, occasional theft or credit card fraud. They're nothing to worry adversely about but do come prepared. So with your flight booked and your insurance taken care of, there's nothing stopping you from having a great holiday in Bangkok and Thailand.
Sid Pascanik never travels without a good holiday insurance policy. He generally uses winter sports insurance from Go Travel Insurance as he loves skiiing.
